Prize for Peace

Something political is going on - I'm not the only one to notice the irony in offering the Nobel Peace Prize to a US President who is currently discussing an expansion to the war in Afghanistan.

Some quotes:
"I believe the Nobel Committee has not met the conditions of Alfred Nobel's will where he stipulates it is to be awarded to those who work for an end to militarism and war, and for disarmament. This is not the first time the Nobel Peace Committee in Oslo has ignored the will of Alfred Nobel and acted against the spirit of what the Nobel Peace Prize is all about," Mairead Maguire.

"He just became the president. Things are just the same as the way they were by the administration of Mr. [George W.] Bush. Things are not better, things are worse and worse." Obaid Alam, Afghanistan, "The number of U.S. Army [troops] has increased here. The number of terrorist attacks increased here. I’m kind of confused whether that Nobel Award [is] for all those things."

“Who, Obama? So fast? Too fast — he hasn’t had the time to do anything yet…For the time being Obama’s just making proposals. But sometimes the Nobel Committee awards the prize to encourage responsible action. Let’s give Obama a chance." Lech Wałęsa

"It's a joke. How embarrassing for those who awarded it to him because he's done nothing for peace. What change has he brought in Iraq, the Middle East or Afghanistan?" Liaqat Baluch

"To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace." President Barack Hussein Obama II

"But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century."

Let's hope so.

  2. Mr Obama had only been President 12 days when he was nominated. Some Americans are confused. As a Canadian I understand this - Americans never understood just how disgusted the world was with the appallingly illegal and immoral Bush administration.

Obama is everything Bush was not - he is intelligent, his inclination is to make peace not war, he does not have a set mind - he makes decisions based on all the facts available to him - he does not make facts to fit his pre-programmed prejudices.

He gives the world the opportunity to start over - he gives the world the opportunity to begin anew with some trust and mutal respect.

will he disapoint? Surely - after all he's only human - and we humans are very good at disappointing.

  3. Thank you for your comments.

I'm currently living here, in the middle-east. The wider region is caught up in so much conflict so peace has to be a top priority. I, too, hope that Obama does as he says he intends to.

  4. yo its pukhtoon007 from ck.

i personali think since day one that obama is the same shit just different coating.
some argue that giving obama the nobel peace prize is to encourge him to be commited to bring peace. he campaigned on hope and change yet nothing has changed same bush policies same, onli thing different is he is making legal what bush did illegali.
since day one i have been against him i would of rather voted mcain on the rhetoric that at least we would of known that mcain was another republician and would of expected him to be similar to bush thus being critical of him but with obama he is gna stab us in the back."lastooney mar"

  5. Salaam Pukhtoon007,

Obama, like any other politician will need to prove himself.

There's a tendancy for all politicians to go stale after a while, and this is probably why I ask the question about giving him the Nobel Prize so soon.

  6. Obama and Osama???? same, WHAT IS THIS. I think Osama must be awarded then. I mean both are doing same, just shoot and shoot. haha I don't know what are their aims in Afghanistan with Atomic Pakistani border. Majority in Pakistan understand may be wrong that America is behind Alqaeda to attack. Dajjal also means "A man who fraud" drived from Arabic word Dajel. In urdu 'Fraib or dhoka'.
